Communications Officer - Union of Northern Workers

Full Time, Indeterminate 

The UNW is a membership driven Union comprised of approximately 6,000 members throughout the Northwest Territories and is currently seeking a full-time permanent Communications Officer for its Yellowknife office. The Communications Officer provides communications advice, assistance and support for all communication activities of the UNW, including media relations and member engagement. The Communications Officer will plan, develop and implement communication strategies and products that advance the strategic direction of UNW. This position works in collaboration with the Executive office.
 

The position requires a post-secondary diploma in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field, OR a combination of education, training and experience with a minimum of three years related experience. The applicant must be proficient in digital, print, and interpersonal communications. Have knowledge of current labour, political, and social justice and northern issues as well as knowledge of the government decision-making and of the Canadian political system. Excitement about organizing, member engagement and mobilization is necessary, with a focus to build collective worker capacity through communication. Must have working knowledge of digital, campaign, web-site and social media products. Tactful and able to engage variety of internal and external partners,  including political partners and media.

Area of Search – This competition is open to the general public with preference give to those who live in the north. 

Salary range is $86,556.78 to $97,692.43 per annum, plus a generous benefits and pension program in accordance with the terms and conditions of the USW Local1-207 collective agreement.
