Purpose of position:
Purpose of Position
This position is one of six senior manager positions reporting to the National President and the Alliance Executive Committee (AEC). Together with the Political Assistants, they form the Directors’ Team.
Under the general guidance of the National President and the AEC, the Directors’ Team constitutes the core team responsible for the strategic planning, development and direction of the work of the organization, ensuring the effective, efficient and economic management of resources and supporting the goals of the PSAC. The emphasis of the position is on creating a more comprehensive and integrated approach within the PSAC through the development of appropriate policies, processes and systems and by strengthening the capacity of the management team, union-management relations and the staff of the PSAC.
The Director of Finance of the PSAC is responsible for ensuring the overall financial integrity of the PSAC and PSAC Holdings Ltd. and for the management, administration and operational integrity of all the sections assigned to his or her portfolio.
Education and Experience
The position requires a professional accounting designation, CPA, and several years’ experience working in a financial management role in a unionized environment.
Knowledge and experience in the development of financial policies, procedures and practices focusing efforts on achieving excellent work outcomes consistent with the organizational priorities and vision.
Knowledge of the structure of the PSAC as well as the broader political, legislative and operational inter-relationships within a large national union organization.
Strong computer skills and demonstrated knowledge of system applications and implementation.
The position requires the ability to provide financial advice to various stakeholders which supports a strategic direction for the organization that anticipates emerging needs in delivering high quality service and programs to staff and the membership.
Demonstrated management and leadership skills including the ability to develop and implement strategic financial planning processes.
The position requires the ability to anticipate and adapt to changes and to lead an effective team through providing direction, encouraging cooperation, building skills and morale and participating as an effective team member to create an environment that nurtures the principles and values of the Alliance.
Strong oral and written communication skills in English and French.
Excellent judgment and demonstrated problem solving, consultative and conflict resolution skills to provide sound direction and advice on a variety of complex operational, political and/or financial issues to all levels of the organization.
Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to play a hands-on role in leading a priority organizational project.
Commitment to trade union and equity principles and social justice objectives as well as a thorough understanding of the sensitive political and social issues between an employer union and its internal bargaining agents.
