The Hospital Employees’ Union is looking for an experienced individual to fill the regular full-time position of General Counsel at its provincial office in Burnaby, British Columbia.
HEU operates in a complex sector with many challenges. As an integral member of the HEU leadership team, you will work in a collaborative environment, with responsibility for providing the union’s leadership with advice on legal strategies and their implementation, managing the legal team, providing legal advice on confidential internal union matters and obtaining and overseeing the work of outside counsel.
You will have a strong commitment to progressive social change and substantial experience as union counsel in workplace law, particularly in the health sector.
LL.B. or Juris Doctor degree from a recognized Canadian law school.
Member in good standing of the Law Society of BC, or eligibility for same.
Strong commitment to labour principles and the goals of HEU.
Good interpersonal skills and ability to build and manage an effective department team.
Skilled at resolving conflict and able to accept and reflect on criticism.
Ability to work under pressure in a high volume of work environment and to manage competing priorities and demands.
An understanding of the labour movement, as well as issues and legislation impacting the health care sector.
Knowledge of substantive law important to HEU that would provide the following knowledge, skills, abilities and experience:
Independently conduct, analyze and synthesize complex legal research, and develop and implement comprehensive and sophisticated legal strategies for HEU campaigns and programs;
Preparation of quality legal pleadings, present persuasive oral advocacy, write cogent reports, opinions and recommendations, provide quality legal judgment, and effectively interact and communicate with a wide variety of staff, officers, local leaders and outside agencies;
Strategic use of the law to further workers’ interests, including developing and employing cutting-edge legal arguments;
Communication of complex and technical information in a clear and understandable way
