Permanent Part-Time Support Staff Durham Region Labour Council

Durham Region Labour Council is seeking a permanent part-time Support Staff.

Durham Region Labour Council (DRLC) comprises almost 70,000 workers and their affiliated unions across Durham Region. DRLC members work at food stores, offices, plants, in public services, construction and much more. The labour council brings these members together every month for regular meetings, and carries out events and activities between meetings.  DRLC meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at the IBEW 353 Hall in Oshawa (note: there are no July and August meetings). Currently our meetings are virtual following guidelines of public health. The Labour Council shapes the local political landscape by adding labour’s voice to issues that affect unionized and non-unionized workers. As a voice for progressive change, social and economic justice, equality and workers’ rights, the Labour Council plays a significant role in the community of Durham Region.

We are a chartered body of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), representing 3.5 million unionized Canadians. Durham Region Labour Council has been the voice of working people in Durham Region since 1942.

We are looking for someone willing to build and grow a democratic union culture while working under the supervision of the Executive and in close collaboration with a diverse membership.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Applicants should have a very good knowledge of general office work and be able to perform with accuracy and minimum supervision, the following duties, among others:

  • Receive incoming calls, place outgoing calls, respond to general enquiries and provide general information to executive and members as required;
  • Receive, process and distribute incoming and outgoing mail, inventory, and courier deliveries as required;
  • Review correspondence and refer to appropriate person or initiate reply as required;
  • Compose correspondence as required;
  • Respond to member inquiries, maintain good member and affiliate relations and solve problems;
  • Maintain the Labour Council financial books as required, including billing and financial matters;
  • Participate in audits and remitting reports to the CLC;
  • Keep database and affiliate lists up-to-date, correspond with affiliates regarding per capita payments on regular basis;
  • Maintain accurate and orderly filing systems;
  • Prepare reports (MS Word, Excel or other applications) as needed;
  • Update website as required;
  • Update Labour Council social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) as required;
  • Event planning in conjunction with and directed by the executive board;
  • Set-up and coordination of meetings and conference/virtual calls – participant arrangements and logistics;
  • Attend meetings and take minutes or notes as required;
  • Other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • We require education (either traditional or non-traditional) in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and directly-related experience;
  • Administrative experience in a professional environment;
  • Ability to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines while working in a high pressure work setting as demonstrated through experience in progressively responsible assignments;
  • Experience working with a variety of computer software applications including Simply Accounting, NationBuilder, MS Word and Excel, and Google Suite. Word, excel are essential;
  • Knowledge and experience with various social media platforms;
  • Initiative, demonstrated organizational abilities, a high degree of accuracy, and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision;
  • Experience with payroll and government remittance;
  • Knowledge of the function of the labour movement in Canada and beyond

Conditions of employment are set out in the collective agreement between Durham Region Labour Council and UFCW, Local 175.

Hours: 18 hours per week. Hours of work shall be 3 days of 6 hours each. Some weekend and evening work may be required.  

Start Date:  This position will begin early January 2021

Location: Work is remote in relation to the current pandemic and public health guidelines; headquarters (post pandemic) may be sought in Durham Region; work is central to Durham Region, Ontario.
