Under the direction of the Director, Human Resources and Information Management, the Sr. HR Advisor – Labour Relations plays the role of managing labour relation issues, complaints and grievances and providing advice to management on all matters touching upon human resources and particularly within the field of labour relations. He/she represents the interests of management in staffing, policy development, collective bargaining, and dispute resolution.
Education and professional qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in law and/or related formal education in labour relations;
Called to the bar and a member in good standing of a provincial or territorial Law Society will be considered an asset.
Experience working in labour/employee relations;
Experience within a unionized environment;
Well developed understanding of and experience with the sensitive political and social issues at the heart of the relationship between an employer union and its internal bargaining agents will be considered as assets;
Experience making representations before a third-party adjudicator or administrative tribunal;
Experience providing advice to management will be considered an asset.
Expert knowledge of labour relations;
Superior knowledge of legal research methodology and mechanisms for alternative dispute resolution;
Extensive knowledge of all human resources technical functions including job analysis and design, recruitment, staffing, compensation, attendance management, learning and development, pension/benefits administration, employee orientation, feedback process, diversity management and organizational design;
Excellent knowledge of the principles of employment equity, human rights obligations, and issues of accommodation in the workplace.
Ability to analyze and interpret federal and provincial labour legislation, board decisions, case law, and arbitral jurisprudence;
Excellent analytical skills and ability to synthesize and interpret complex legal issues in order to ensure compliance between legal imperatives, collective agreements, and internal policies and procedures;
Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English and French (will be assessed)
Demonstrated consultative and problem-solving skills;
