Salary and Benefits: $90,937 to $98,351 plus $1,000/year bilingualism bonus

Purpose of the Position:
The Political Communications Officer will support CEIU’s internal and external communications strategies, write and disseminate publicity material, respond to inquiries from the public and media, and coordinate promotional events.
This position provides political and communications advice, assistance and support to the National President and National Executive Vice-President in their role as the political voice for CEIU, as well as for members of the National Executive (NE).
The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance of CEIU’s social media, including aspects of the national website, develops newsletters for members internally, writes briefing notes and speeches for the national union leadership.
Reporting to the National President, the Political Communications Officer will:
Collaborate with management to develop and implement an effective communications strategy based on our target audiences.
Write, edit, and distribute content, including publications, press releases, website content, annual reports, speeches, and other marketing material that communicates the organization’s activities and promotes the union to the members and to the public.
Responds to media inquiries, arranges interviews, and upon request, acts as a spokesperson for the union.
Establishes and maintains effective relationships with journalists and politicians and maintains a media and political contact database.
Seeks opportunities to enhance the reputation of the union, and coordinate publicity events as required.
Maintains and updates CEIU’s social media accounts.
Collaborates with Representation and other relevant staff to develop newsletters for members internally.
Writes briefing notes and speeches for national union leadership.
Maintain records of media coverage and collates analytics and metrics.
Qualifications and Competencies:
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, or in a related field, or the equivalent of work experience in the same area of expertise.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both official languages
Minimum of 2 – 5 years relevant experience in a communications role.
Knowledge of desktop publishing and design software (ex InDesign/Photoshop).
Previous experience in handling political lobbying, social media, and the press.
Good time management and organizational skills.
Ability to manage conflict as it arises and escalate as required.
Experience in Microsoft Office, content management systems, and social media platforms.
Experience handling a press conference.
Ability to manage media relations and provide arguments/pitches.
An ability to work on national or large-scale strategy plans as well as day-to-day tasks.
Ability to think both creatively and strategically.
Ability to run PR campaigns that deliver measurable results and meet objectives.
Deadline-oriented, inquisitive, with great follow-up and reporting skills.
Creativity in securing coverage and buzz with traditional outlets.
Ability to manage various forms of social media.
Ability to respond well under pressure with strict time limits.
A demonstrated ability in maintaining good relationships (tact, diplomacy, courtesy) with internal and external stakeholders.
