Overview: As a growing union in BC, UFCW 1518 is committed to the highest level of member representation – and that means an engaged membership. In this UFCW 1518 Director position, your main role is to oversee the Communications and Campaigns of the organization. The more members engage in the union, the more we grow our collective voice and power
You are a senior-level communications and campaign professional who has extensive experience and can instinctively develop and manage the key components of effective communication plans and delivery.
Effective team building and management skills will be critical in this role so that staff reports, including Union Representatives and Administrative Staff, have the support and clear direction they need to execute their assignments. A strong understanding of various technology platforms and their applications is a significant asset and will provide leadership and guidance for staff reports so they perform the important work of member-based engagement and
communications.
You will work closely with excluded management at UFCW to manage your assigned team of staff, this will include, but is not limited to:
• ensuring all work is assigned and completed
• managing budgets under financial policies and practices and participating in the employer’s planning processes
• relaying instructions of management
• performing quality control oversite and writing performance assessments
• performance issues or conduct management
• providing on-the-job detailed training and identifying training and areas of support
• managing and scheduling the time off for direct reports to ensure work-life balance is a priority and contributes to a positive work culture
This position will ensure activities are scalable operations, provide rapid and effective communication with the membership and stakeholders, leverage existing tools and methods, share best practices, and direct teams
Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field is required, an advanced degree is preferred
Minimum 7-10 years experience in a senior role either in-house or with an agency
Extensive successful campaign, writing and editing experience with a variety of print and online communications and campaigns with portfolio Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and
output
Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team of communications specialists
Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
Politically savvy and understands the importance of engaging members and deploying effective communications and modern communication tools and platforms
Must hold a valid driver’s license
Proficiency in languages in addition to English

UFCW 1518 Directors Summary of Compensation
Starting rate as of October 1, 2022: $115,987
After 12 months $118,200
Allowances $1500 paid quarterly
Statutory holidays:
• All provincial and federal stats
Vacation:
3 weeks to start progression up to 7 weeks
Accumulated time off:
4 hours accrued every week worked (a day off every two weeks)
Sick bank credits:
4 hours accrued every month worked to a maximum of 48 hours.
