Pay Band 11: $37.25 to $43.86

POSITION ROLE:

The SGEU has developed its own Long Term Disability Plan with the primary responsibility to ensure that the membership is provided with income protection and/or services to those members who are disabled by illness or injury.  This is a position involving work as an advocate on behalf of the LTD plan.

General supervision and guidance is received from the Director of Disability Management but the incumbent is expected to plan and execute work with limited supervision.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

The following are the key accountabilities and primary functions of the position. Other duties and tasks may be assigned. Performance evaluations are based on the requirements contained in this position description, policies and procedures of the organization and the department and any specific goals and objectives that may be set for each employee.

Primary duties and responsibilities include working on LTD claims, and acting as an advocate for the Plan from the pre-appeals level through to the arbitration stage. This will involve doing research into disabilities and various illnesses and preparing briefs and presentations to the LTD Supervisory Committee or arbitrations. Other duties include providing Advocacy for Employment Insurance appeals, Saskatchewan Government Insurance appeals, Workers Compensation appeals as well as Canada Pension Disability appeals. This position demands a high level of confidentiality.

Employees in this position will be required to liaise with other staff, stewards and claimants to ensure all necessary information is available. They will be expected to act as an advisor to committees working on developing policy surrounding dysfunctional workplaces, OH&S issues, and return to work, and other areas related to illness and disability, and to committees developing educationals on these issues.  They will sometimes be required to work with bargaining units as an advisor to assist them in developing language relevant to LTD issues, EFAP, return to work, etc.  Employees in this position will need to be able to understand and apply legislation and Collective Agreement language regarding return to work and disabilities.  They may be required to cover for the Director of Disability Management when that person is on vacation or other lengthy absences and will require the ability to perform basic administrative tasks. 

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

At least five years advocacy experience and some knowledge of the appeals process is required.  The ability to write and present briefs/presentations is required and to interpret legislation and Collective Agreement language relevant to return to work and disabilities.  Knowledge of conflict resolution and mediation, the ability to work independently and perform tasks with little guidance or supervision and good interpersonal skills are required.  Demonstrated ability to manage basic administration is required, such as managing and maintaining files, etc.

A good knowledge of trade unions and their purpose is also required.

CONDITIONS OF WORK:

This position will be headquartered in Regina. This position is designated as field, working 144 hours in a four-week averaging period.  All other terms and conditions are subject to the collective bargaining agreement between SGEU and USW Local 9841.
