Overview
The Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) is looking for a highly organized and dynamic
Education and Events Departmental Staff member to coordinate and manage AFL events
and actions. Reporting to the AFL Officers and AFL Directors, you will play a key role in
planning and delivering important AFL events such as the rallies, tours, Convention, Mid-
Term Forum, Winter School, Kids Summer Camp, December 6th Commemoration, April 28 th
Day of Mourning, and other initiatives. This role requires strong project management skills,
attention to detail and the ability to lead event logistics from start to finish.
What You’ll Do:
Develop event concepts, create detailed timelines and manage budgets to ensure
successful execution of AFL events and actions.
Source, negotiate and manage contracts with venues and vendors, including
caterers, entertainment and audio-visual providers.
Oversee all event logistics—flow, seating, speaker schedules and on-site
operations—to ensure smooth delivery.
Coordinate tours such as affiliation drives and member engagement.
Maintain clear and consistent communication with internal teams, vendors and
event staff throughout the event lifecycle.
Track expenses, prepare invoices and manage finances to keep events within
budget.
Proactively solve problems on event days to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Collect and analyze post-event feedback and data to evaluate success and
recommend improvements.
Support and coordinate temporary event staff to assist with AFL events and
actions.
What We’re Looking For:
Strong organizational skills to simultaneously manage multiple tasks, deadlines and
complex logistics.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for working with vendors and
colleagues effectively.
Proven problem-solving abilities to quickly handle issues during events.
Solid time management skills to meet deadlines and manage event timelines.
Experience managing budgets and financial details to control costs.
Flexibility and adaptability to handle unexpected changes and shifting priorities.
Empathy, active listening and critical thinking to navigate diverse stakeholder
needs.
Negotiation skills to secure favorable vendor terms and build strong relationships.
Leadership skills to coordinate and motivate event staff and volunteers.
Preferred Experience:
Previous event planning experience, especially in political or labour movement
organizing, is an asset.
Familiarity with AFL’s mission, values and key events is a plus.
Work Conditions:
This position is based in the AFL office in Edmonton with some hybrid
opportunities.
Some evening and weekend work may be required to support event schedules.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary and benefits are provided according to the Unifor 445 collective agreement.
