Finance Manager

Overview of Position:

Civic Service Union 52 (CSU 52) is seeking an experienced finance professional to assume a key leadership role in the administration of CSU 52’s finances and building operations. This position has been created to provide for an orderly succession plan for the current Financial Administrator / Building Coordinator, and to modernize CSU 52’s financial systems and processes.

The Finance Manager will work closely with the current Financial Administrator to learn and document existing procedures, support day-to-day financial operations, and ensure continuity for the Union and the Union 52 Benevolent Society. The position will also lead modernization initiatives, including enhanced accrual basis accounting, increased use of electronic payments, and improvements to financial reporting for the Board and membership.

This is an out-of-scope, confidential position that will ultimately hold primary responsibility for CSU 52’s financial administration and building coordination, along with supervision of one to two Financial Assistants.

The Candidate:

A professional accounting designation (CPA) or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience is required. The succe  ssful candidate will have several years of progressive experience in accounting or financial management, preferably in a union, non-profit, or public sector environment. Experience with full-cycle accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, audit preparation, and working with multiple bank and investment accounts is essential.

The candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-financial audiences, including elected leaders and committees. Experience implementing or improving electronic payment processes, online banking controls, and accounting systems is considered a strong asset.

The candidate must demonstrate highly developed problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills, and professional communication skills. The candidate can prioritize multiple activities, work independently, and contribute as a member of a small, highly effective team. The position requires a high degree of discretion and judgment in handling confidential financial and labour relations information.

Advanced proficiency in accounting software (such as Sage 50 or equivalent) and Microsoft Excel is required. Supervisory or team lead experience, particularly in directing the work of support staff, is an asset.

The Organization:

CSU 52 is a multi-employer Union providing service to an administrative, technical, and professional membership in 6 bargaining units: The City of Edmonton, EPCOR, Capital Power, The Edmonton Public Library, Valleyview Library, and TELUS World of Science – Edmonton. Together, CSU 52 and the Union 52 Benevolent Society manage multi-million dollar budgets, investments, reserve funds, member programs, and a union-owned building.

Hours of Work & Compensation:

The salary range for the Finance Manager will be $100,000 to $125,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is an out-of-scope (non-union) position.

The normal hours of work are 7.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday, within the CSU 52 office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m (a Compressed Hours of Work program is in effect). Occasional extended hours may be required to meet reporting deadlines, support Board or membership meetings, or address urgent financial or building matters.
