Labour Relations Coordinator
Job Summary
The Labour Relations Coordinator (LRC) plays a key support role within the University of the Fraser Valley Faculty and Staff Association (FSA), a member-led union representing approximately 1,300 faculty and staff. Guided by principles of equity, fairness, and member solidarity, the LRC provides strategic, administrative, and research support to the FSA’s elected Executive and steward network.
Working under the direction of the FSA President, the LRC, supports the Association’s labour relations work, including grievance processes, bargaining preparation, and the application of the Collective Agreement. The LRC helps coordinate documentation, track labour relations issues, maintain accurate records, and provide research and logistical support to elected FSA representatives.
Labour Relations Support
- Assists in supplying and identifying documentation required for any mediations or arbitrations.
- As directed reviews federal or provincial legislation that impacts the Collective Agreement.
- Logging and storing documentation required for grievances, mediation, and arbitration.
Collective Agreement / Bylaws / Policy Adherence and Monitoring
- Reviews grievance precedents and prior contract language intent.
Bargaining Support
- Supports the collection of information for bargaining.
- Assists in developing and maintaining the bargaining records and other bargaining processes.
- Compile and maintain bargaining binders and other related documentation.
- Tracks potential problematic language within the Collective Agreement for future bargaining.
- Works closely with the VP Bargaining to create documentation required for bargaining and supports the Contract Committee and the Bargaining Team.
Grievance Support
- Maintains files and records for grievances, identifying the central issues and relevant Collective Agreement provisions.
- Assists and supports the VP Grievances and Stewards with maintaining adherence to grievance timelines.
Record Keeping and Document Preparation
- Maintains a grievance database.
- Provides support to the Grievance Review Committee, Steward Committee, Labour & Management Committee, Bargaining Committee, Contract Committee, and Joint Bargaining Meetings by carrying such duties as: scheduling meetings; booking facilities; compiling and distributing meeting packages; assisting in the preparation of agendas; taking minutes; distributing minutes and other attachments; arranging catering where necessary; following up on the status of action items for the purpose of reporting at the next meeting.
- Supports the preparation of materials for formal labour relation discussions with the employer.
- Takes notes during grievance meetings, discipline meetings, and investigation meetings.
- Attends meeting as directed by the President.
Other
- Assists the Administrative Coordinator with organizing any FSA events and member meetings at large.
- Performs duties of the Administrative Coordinator or Financial Coordinator as required and directed by the FSA President during their vacation or leave of absence.
Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
- Direct experience in a Labour Relations setting or an equivalent combination of education and training; credential preferred. Preference given for professional experience in post-secondary labour environment.
- Thorough understanding of labour legislation and processes, such as the BC Labour Relations Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Code, WorkSafe BC, and Employment Standards Act.
- High degree of discretion and confidentiality.
- Ability to work effectively and co-operatively with others.
- Demonstrated competence in MS Office Suite.
- Strong organizational skills.
Contract Length
- 12-month (1-year) term contract with the intention to turn it into a full-time, permanent position.
