Bilingual Legal Officer

The AJC is currently seeking a Bilingual Legal Officer who is interested in working in a dynamic, small team setting that promotes the value and worth of federal public service lawyers and seeks to improve their working conditions.

ABOUT THE POSITION 

Under the direction of the Director of Representation Services & Legal Counsel, the Legal Officer supports the Director of Representation Services by providing legal advice and representation to the AJC in support of the maintenance, application, interpretation and enforcement of the collective agreement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts legal research, drafts notices, and pleadings, delivers oral and/or written submissions on a broad range of issues affecting the AJC membership
  • Drafts legal opinions on various matters including federal government policies affecting the AJC and its membership
  • Represents the AJC both informally and in formal procedures before employer officials, major stakeholders and before the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board (FPSLREB)
  • Represents the AJC at certain labour-management meetings such as public service wide labour management committees, national working groups and other national committees and, participates in such other activities that tie into AJC’s representation services generally, including reporting activities.
  • Advises and represents the AJC on the exclusion of members from the bargaining unit
  • Advises the AJC on essential service agreements
  • Any other relevant duties as assigned

Statement of Qualifications

  • Membership in good standing of the Bar of Ontario or of another Canadian province or territory.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in federal labour law, human rights and labour relations.
  • Experience appearing before the FPSLREB is highly valued
  • Knowledge of a union’s duty of fair representation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the union legal framework and commitment to union
  • Knowledge of legislation and case authorities governing labour relations in the federal public service including Treasury Board and other government policies, directives and processes.
  • Bilingualism (French, English – written and verbal) imperative
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to manage competing priorities
  • Strong initiative, administration, organizational, planning and time management skills to work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
  • Proficiency in MS Office.

COMPENSATION AND OTHER BENEFITS

  1. COMPETITIVE SALARY COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE: $ 92,056 to $132,472 with Bilingual Bonus of $1200.00 (Union COPE Local 225)
  2. GROUP BENEFITS: Health, Dental, Life, Disability
  3. PENSION PLAN: CAAT
  4. VACATION: 4 weeks/year to start in addition to December holiday season and other paid leave
  5. JOB TERM: Indeterminate Full-time (35 hours per week
  6. Hybrid position with, in person days required at the AJC Ottawa office.

START DATE: As soon as possible.
