The CALM Awards are for full members of the Canadian Association of Labour Media (who have paid membership fees for 2017). The awards honour excellence in the print, broadcast, online and graphics arts fields for material produced in 2016. You can join CALM at any time if you’d like to make a submission to the awards contest. To confirm your union’s membership status with us, please contact editor@calm.ca.
Several of the awards are split into two categories: staff or volunteer. Items produced by union communications staff or outside professionals are in the same category. The other category is for volunteers (that includes those who get a few hours’ time paid by the local). Judges reserve the right to move entries from one category to the other.
Entry fee:
- $25 (+HST $28.25) for local labour councils and for local unions with up to 1,000 members
- $75 (+HST $84.75) for union locals with more than 1,000 members
- $150 (+HST $169.50) for provincial, national or international unions and federations.
You can enter any number of categories once you’ve paid the entry fee.
You can also enter the CALM Awards through the mail. If you are submitting paper copies, please remember to clearly label each entry. DO NOT SUBMIT ENTRIES TWICE (I.E. online and by mail). If you mail through a courier please email editor@calm.ca with the expected time of arrival. Due to the proximity to a Canada Post counter, we prefer that packages are sent through Canada Post.
Please read the rules closely. Any submission that doesn’t adhere to the rules might be disqualified. You can download the rules package here.

Online Judge: Rebecca Rose
Rebecca Rose is a freelance writer who focuses on misogyny and rape culture, Queer and Trans people and communities, various social movements, and politics (mostly when it makes her angry). A former student activist, Rebecca began working in solidarity with the labour movement, through her involvement in the Ryerson Students’ Union (RSU) and Canadian Federation of Students. Rebecca was previously a member of CUPE 1281 and has worked for and provided social media workshops to various unions including the PSAC, CUPE, and UNIFOR. As a Cape Bretoner, she takes pride in coming from a line of miners and steel plant workers. She is currently an active member of the Canadian Freelance Union (CFU). Rebecca Rose is a Ryerson University Journalism graduate who has written for publications such as The Coast, Daily Xtra, the Halifax Media Co-op, Rabble.ca, and Autostraddle.

Design Judge: Si sityaawks – Woman who creates change (Jessica Wood)
Jessica Wood is an Gitxsan/Tsimshian photographer, photojournalist and activist based on the West Coast of British Columbia. Her background in traditional Indigenous art has laid the foundation for her contemporary work. Broadcast Judge: Julia Caron
Julia Caron is a bilingual bundle of contradictions, endlessly enamoured by the radical potential of the Internet. She has called Quebec City home since 2008; it is only appropriate she ended up in one of the oldest cities in North America, given her affection for all things old. She works as a journalist for CBC Radio based in the province’s capital. Her radio documentaries have been featured on national programs such as In the Field, As It Happens, and Unreserved. Her writing has been featured in Shameless Magazine, WORN Journal, Racialicious and Missy Magazine. You can find her spending far too much of her free time online, engaged in critical discussions about social justice and contemporary art.

Writing Judge: Jennifer O'Brien
Jennifer O'Brien is an award-winning journalist with 20 years experience in the newspaper industry. For 16 of those years, she worked as a reporter and multi-media journalist at the London Free Press, where she focused on crime, social justice and issues that impact London's diverse and cultural communities. Jennifer's work includes a vast array of investigative and feature reports that put a spotlight on inequality, challenged the status quo and triggered community change.
